Canon EOS C500 Mark II and Entaniya Fisheye HAL 220

We tested a Canon C500 Mark II cinema camera with the Entaniya Fisheye HAL 220 series of 220-degree super wide-angle fisheye lenses.

Canon’s cinema cameras include the C300, C500, C700, etc., and as long as the models are compatible with the PL mount, they seem to have basically the same structure, so it should be possible to install them in models other than the C500 Mark II we tested.

The lenses used in the test were
There are two lenses: the HAL 220 LF, which covers full-size sensors, and the HAL 220 PL, which covers the Super35 sensor.

HAL 220 LF(Image Circle Size :46.3mm)

First up is the HAL 220 LF, which has an image circle that covers a large-format sensor.

The Canon EOS C500 Mark II has a 38.1 x 20.1mm full size format sensor, so the HAL 220 LF is the best lens to use as a diagonal fisheye lens.

Variable Focus Lenses

The HAL 220 LF is a fixed-focus lens, but by inserting a spacer ring inside the lens, the focal length (image circle size) can be changed.

The focal length can be changed in 11 steps, and the image circle for each focal length is shown in the above figure.
(A number such as 12.6 mm is the focal length, where H is the horizontal field of view, V is the vertical field of view and D is the diagonal field of view.

For example, if you want to use it as a diagonal fisheye lens and you want to get the maximum viewing angle, you can use a spacer ring with a focal length of 12.1 mm to cover the entire sensor and get a diagonal of 213 degrees.

No other lens can capture images with a diagonal angle of view greater than 210 degrees and a horizontal field of view of over 180 degrees, and this lens is the only one that can capture special images.

The HAL 220 LF was attached to the monitor and the resulting image was checked.
You can see that the diagonal fisheye lens completely covers the full-size format sensor.

These images were taken with the Entaniya Fisheye HAL 220 LF.
It’s like an action-camera-like super wide-angle shot.

HAL 220 PL(Image Circle Size :29.8mm)

This is a test of the HAL 220 PL.

The maximum image circle size is 29.8mm (at 8mm focal length), so it won’t be able to cover the sensor of the full-format EOS C500, but when cropping with the Super 35, the 8.03mm focal length can be used as a full diagonal fisheye.

Variable Focus Lenses

Like the HAL 220 LF, the HAL 220 PL is a fixed-focus lens, but with fourteen focal lengths (image circle size) that can be changed by using a spacer ring inside the lens.

Used in VR, dome video and Anamorfish

You can change the image circle and adjust the angle of view to suit your purpose.

Anamorfish (Super Wide Image Video))

A sample of Anamorfish, which corrected the distortion of the fisheye lens to create super-wide-angle images.
The unique super-wide-angle images, which cannot be captured with ordinary wide-angle lenses, are attracting attention as a new form of video expression.

Entaniya Fisheye HAL 200/ HAL 250 EF Mount

Since Canon’s cinema cameras are based on the EF mount, Entaniya’s fisheye lenses can also be fitted with the HAL 200, a 200-degree fisheye lens and the HAL 250, a 250-degree fisheye lens that are compatible with the EF mount.

I think these lenses also enable a new kind of video expression by using it for different purposes.
