Panasonic LUMIX S1H and Entaniya Fisheye HAL

Full-size format mirrorless camera Panasonic LUMIX S1H

The Panasonic LUMIX S1H is a mirrorless camera with a full-size sensor, making it the most suitable model for video shooting applications in Panasonic S1 series of full-size mirrorless cameras.

As of November 2019, Panasonic’s LUMIX GH5 and Entaniya Fisheye HAL 200 MFT 3.6 combined systems are the main professional equipment for shooting 3D 180 VR, but with the increasing use of large format cameras, we’re getting more and more inquiries about whether the full-size LUMIX S1H can shoot 3D 180 VR.

How to install the Entaniya Fisheye HAL on the Panasonic LUMIX S1H

The lens mount for the Panasonic LUMIX S1H is an L-mount that is used by Leica, SIGMA and Panasonic.

The Entaniya Fisheye HAL series lens mounts are MFT mount, SONY E mount, C mount, and EF mount, none of which are compatible with the L mount.

However, using a mount conversion adapter, you may be able to attach it to a camera with a different mount format.

In terms of the Entaniya Fisheye HAL series, EF mount lenses can be attached to L mount cameras using a mount converter.

Therefore, the Entaniya Fisheye, which is mounted on an L-mount camera, is an EF-mount lens.

● Entaniya Fisheye HAL 250 EF 6.0

● Entaniya Fisheye HAL 200 EF 6.0

Both lenses have large image circles, so they can be used as circumferential fisheye lenses in full-size formats.

If you use the PL-L mount adapter, PL mount lenses can be used with L-mount cameras. This means that the Entaniya Fisheye HAL 220 PL lens can also be used, but unfortunately, this time we will only be testing the EF mount lens.

Using the EF-L Mount Converter

The EF-L mount converter is an adapter that converts Canon EF mount lenses into mounts to fit L-mount cameras; as of November 2019, the only EF-L mount adapter available is SIGMA MC-21.

Since both EF-mount lenses and L-mount cameras are popular mount formats, we can expect many manufacturers to develop mount converters for the EF-L.

The other methods are adapters that convert EF mounts to Leica M mounts and adapters that convert Leica M mounts to Leica L mounts, which are sold by many mount converter manufacturers.

The combination of these two mount converters allows you to attach an EF mount lens to an L mount camera.

SIGMA mount converter MC-21 needs to be modified

SIGMA’s MC-21 mount converter has electronic contacts, but the Entaniya Fisheye HAL EF mount lens has a protruding rear group that interferes with the mount converter.

Removing the inside of the mount adapter is easy enough to do in about 10 minutes with a precision screwdriver, but you may lose the manufacturer’s warranty or be unable to return to the original. Please work at your own risk.

Also, even if EF-L mount converters are sold by other companies, they may interfere with EF-L mount converters that have electronic contacts and may not be able to be installed.

Choose a mount converter with no electronic contacts.

Entaniya Fisheye HAL 200 EF 6.0

This photo was taken at full size 3:2 (6000×4000) using the Entaniya Fisheye HAL 200 EF 6.0 (focal length 6.0mm).

The image circle size of the Entaniya Fisheye HAL 200 EF 6.0 is 180° = φ18.2mm / 200° = φ19.9m, so the circumferential image will be taken with about 2mm above and below the full size sensor.

This photo was taken at full size 3:2 (6000×4000) using the Entaniya Fisheye HAL 250 EF 6.0 (focal length 6.0mm).

The image circle size of the Entaniya Fisheye HAL 250 EF 6.0 is 180° = φ18.2mm / 250° = φ23.7mm; the sensor size of the Panasonic S1H is 35.6mm x 23.8mm, so if the numbers are correct, the entire circumferential image will fit.

However, in the actual photo, the top and bottom seem to be cut off just a little bit.

This doesn’t mean that a sensor smaller than the number is used. I think this is because the sensor is cropped on the inside. The actual shooting size seems to be about 23mm in height.

One of the features of the Panasonic Lumix S1H is the ability to shoot in a variety of formats when shooting in motion.

While most typical mirrorless cameras can only shoot in 4K or FHD/HD with an aspect ratio of 16:9, the Panasonic Lumix S1H is capable of shooting in a variety of formats.

Crop sizes, lenses and applications

There are four main points for selecting a lens.

1.) Can you get a full image circle? Survey and omnidirectional recording applications

2.)Can you get a 180-degree circumference image? Dome video applications and 180VR applications

[16:9 5.9K] 3200 x 3200

3.) VR applications

For VR applications, the vertical field of view must be at least 190 degrees (ideally 200 degrees or more).

The horizontal field of view needs to cover 360 degrees and requires multiple cameras, or multiple shots.

Ideally, the total field of view should be about 420-440 degrees in total to stitch 360 degrees.

The above sample is stitched from a front and rear two-way shot at 16:9 5.9K using the Entaniya Fisheye HAL250 EF 6.0.

3.) Does the image circle completely cover the sensor? Wide screen applications

When used as a diagonal fisheye lens, you can get an ultra-wide angle image.

If the image circles are just to the left and right, even if the diagonal is not covered, you can get an ultra-wide image called Anamorfish by correcting the peripheral distortion.

It also makes it easier to create images that take advantage of the characteristics of wide-angle lenses, such as FISH and CROP, which crop a part of the fisheye image.
