SIGMA fp with Entaniya Fisheye HAL

SIGMA fp full-size format mirrorless camera

The SIGMA fp is a mirrorless camera with a full-size sensor. It’s a full-size format camera, but with a camera body smaller than a passport.

This camera not only takes photos but also videos with external recording up to 12bit CinemaDNG support.

The compact body size can be used for 3D stereo 180VR applications.

We tested the mounting of lenses such as the Entaniya Fisheye HAL 200 6.0mm.

How to attach the Entaniya Fisheye HAL to SIGMA fp

The SIGMA fp has an L-mount lens mount, which is used by Leica, Sigma, and Panasonic.

The Entaniya Fisheye HAL series lens mounts are MFT mount, SONY E mount, C mount, and EF mount, none of which are compatible with the L mount.

However, using a mount conversion adapter, you may be able to attach it to a camera with a different mount format.

In terms of the Entaniya Fisheye HAL series, EF mount lenses can be attached to L mount cameras using a mount converter.

Therefore, the Entaniya Fisheye, which can be mounted on L-mount cameras, will be the following EF mount compatible lenses.

● Entaniya Fisheye HAL 250 EF 4.3

● Entaniya Fisheye HAL 250 EF 6.0

● Entaniya Fisheye HAL 200 EF 6.0

Both lenses have large image circles, so they can be used as circumferential fisheye lenses in full-size formats.

By using the PL-L mount adapter, you can use the standard mount PL mount lens with an L-mount camera. This means that the Entaniya Fisheye HAL 220 PL lens can also be used, but unfortunately, this time we will only be testing the EF mount lens.

The SIGMA SIGMA MOUNT CONVERTER MC-31 PL-L Mount Converter is also available as a PL-L mount adapter.

Using the EF-L Mount Converter

The EF-L mount converter is an adapter that converts Canon EF mount lenses into mounts to fit L-mount cameras; as of November 2019, the only EF-L mount adapter available is SIGMA MC-21.

Due to the popularity of both EF-mount lenses and L-mount cameras in the mount format, many manufacturers will develop mount converters for the EF-L.

The other method is to use an adapter that converts the EF mount to the Leica M mount, and an adapter that converts the Leica M mount to the Leica L mount, both of which are sold by many mount converter manufacturers, so you can combine these two mount converters to attach an EF mount lens to an L mount camera.

SIGMA Mount Converter MC-21 needs to be modified

SIGMA’s MC-21 mount converter has electronic contacts, but the Entaniya Fisheye HAL EF mount lens is designed with a protruding rear group that interferes with the mount converter.

The work of removing the inside itself is so easy that it can be completed in about 10 minutes if there is a precision screwdriver, but because there is a possibility that the manufacturer’s warranty will disappear and it will not be possible to return it to its original state, it becomes the work at its own risk.

Also, even if an EF-L mount converter is sold by another company, the mount converter with electronic contacts may interfere with the EF-L mount converter and prevent it from being installed.

For example, muk Camera Service’s Canon EOS Bridge Adapter (EF-M) and LUMIX S1 L Mount Adapter (M-L) mount adapters are tubular in shape and can avoid interference without modification.

Entaniya Fisheye HAL 200 EF 6.0

This photo was taken at full size 3:2 (6000×4000) using the Entaniya Fisheye HAL 200 EF 6.0 (focal length 6.0mm).

The image circle size of the Entaniya Fisheye HAL 200 EF 6.0 is 180° = φ18.2mm / 200° = φ19.9m, so the circumferential image will be taken with about 2mm above and below the full size sensor.

Crop sizes, lenses and applications

There are four main points for selecting a lens.

1.) Can you get a circumferential image? Survey and omnidirectional recording applications

Is it possible to get a circumferential fisheye image of a fisheye lens without vignetting?

If the image circle is too large in relation to the sensor, the top and bottom will be cut off. Also, if the image circle is too small, the resolution will be low.

Ideally, the image circle should be at the top and bottom of the sensor.

2.) Can you get an image of a 180-degree circumference? Dome video and 180VR applications

It must be at least 180 degrees (ideally at least 190 degrees considering the margins) when it is used for dome video.

When using a 200° or 250° lens, the top and bottom image circles may be cut to achieve resolution, but this is not a problem as long as the 180° lens is maintained.

This is also an important point for 3D180VR applications.

3.) VR applications

For VR applications, the vertical field of view must be at least 190 degrees (ideally 200 degrees or more).

The horizontal field of view needs to cover 360 degrees and requires multiple cameras, or multiple shots.
Ideally, the total field of view should be about 420-440 degrees in total to stitch 360 degrees

The above sample is stitched from a three-way shot using the Entaniya Fisheye HAL200 EF 6.0.
